Chapter Five

Ian was about to reply to yet another verbal jab from Jareth when a sound caught his ear. He turned his head when the door opened. Kamon walked in and paused when he saw Jareth sitting across from Ian. Kamon hesitated briefly before bowing.

“Hello, again,” Jareth said. “Come join us. I’ve a proposal you should hear. Ian insists he isn’t authorized to give an opinion.”

That’s not what I said, and you know it. Ian struggled to keep his mouth shut, a week of suggestive comments and veiled remarks having finally pushed him to his limit. Kamon seemed to take note of this as he approached.

“Your Majesty, would you please leave my vampire alone? He’s more skilled at controlling his tongue than I am, but anyone could see you’re annoying him.” Kamon sat by Ian and met Jareth’s gaze steadily. “And he actually cares whether he offends you or not, so show some mercy?”

Jareth smiled. “I think I like you two together. You say the things he only dares to think.” His gaze moved to Ian. “Although, he has let loose on me a couple of times.”

Ian had grown used to Kamon speaking his mind and wasn’t too concerned about how Jareth would react. At the moment, he focused on Kamon using the words “my vampire”. Was he only being defensive because they were lovers, or had he begun to accept the idea of a long-term relationship?

“Since you just came from seeing Kara, you must’ve come to some kind of decision,” Kamon said. “Is this how it’s really done, making deals before the trial even begins?”

Ian touched Kamon’s hand, reminding himself that he did need to keep his mate from going too far. “Kamon, hear him out.”

Jareth waved his hand. “Let him speak. I like it.” He leaned forward, bracing his forearms on his knees and bringing his hands together. “And I’m not offended. I simply wish to hear your thoughts about what I have in mind now rather than going into it with an audience tomorrow. All right?”

Kamon nodded. “Go ahead then.”

“Her guilt can’t be denied, but she’s young. She was in an unhappy marriage and made mistakes. She admits to them and now accepts the blame. I’m not pleased she let you take the blame at first, and that might count against her. We can’t be sure she actually would’ve confessed if Ian hadn’t intervened. However, her condition worsened her stress, and you could reasonably argue hindered her logic throughout the proceedings. Plus, with your parents gone, she was without guidance. Yes, she had you, but it’s not the same as parental protection and advice. The matter’s simplified since Logan has no living relatives to demand anything. It gives me a certain amount of freedom. And there’s the child to think of.”

“You’ve just summed up our case quite well,” Kamon said.

Ian couldn’t tell what Kamon was thinking, but he had a feeling he knew how Kamon would react in a few moments when he heard Jareth’s proposal. Jareth had laughed at Ian’s prediction, but Ian felt he knew his lover quite well.
